Phil and Penny Knight once again ranked near the top for U.S. philanthropy in 2023, and the family’s charitable giving continues to accelerate.

The Nike cofounder and his wife gave away $1.2 billion last year, according to a new list from the Chronicle of Philanthropy, ranking them No. 2 nationally. They last appeared on the list in 2021 when they gave away $700 million. They’ve now ranked in the list’s top 10 five times.

The bulk of the $1.2 billion in 2023 went to the Knight Foundation, the family’s private foundation. The Knights gave the foundation more than $900 million last year.

In December, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported the foundation gave away $212.5 million in 2022, its fourth consecutive year of record donations. The Chronicle on Tuesday reported the foundation gave away another $237.5 million in 2023, making it five consecutive years of record gifts.

The foundation’s annual tax return, which provides details on its giving, likely won’t be available until November.

In 2022, before the $900 million gift, the Knight Foundation reported $3.8 billion in assets, making it the largest philanthropic organization in Oregon.

The Knight family’s biggest announced gift in 2023 was a $400 million investment in Portland’s Black community. The Knights will use the foundation to cover half of the investment and cover the other half as a personal gift, according to the Chronicle.

Other big gifts for the Knights last year, according to the Chronicle, included $104 million to an unnamed donor-advised fund, $29 million to the University of Oregon Foundation and $5.2 million to other groups.

Phil Knight stepped down from Nike’s board in 2016 (he now serves as chairman emeritus) and said he would eventually give away the majority of his wealth.

Forbes estimates the Knight family is worth $40.7 billion.
