UPDATE (12:30 p.m. Wednesday): The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office identified the man who died at Mt. Bachelor ski area Tuesday as Robert Douglas Harrington, 58, of Bend.

Harrington suffocated after falling into a tree well, according to a joint investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Deschutes County Medical Examiner. He is the fifth person to die in a tree well at Mt. Bachelor since 2018.

A man died after he was found unresponsive at Mt. Bachelor ski area Tuesday afternoon, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

Mt. Bachelor’s patrol responded to the West Bowls area off the Northwest chairlift around 1:50 p.m., Lauren Burke, Mt. Bachelor’s spokesperson, wrote in a text message. Law enforcement and emergency personnel responded shortly after, said Lt. Mike Sundberg, a sheriff’s office spokesperson, in a press release.

Someone nearby performed CPR on the man while emergency services were on the way. Ski patrol and Bend Fire & Rescue medics snowmobiled the man to the ski area’s west village patrol room.

“Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful,” Sundberg said in the release.

Mt. Bachelor confirmed the death Tuesday evening. The man was pronounced deceased at 3:12 p.m., Burke said.

It was unclear if the man died of a ski-related incident or something else.

“The entire Mt. Bachelor team sends their deepest condolences and thoughts to the family and friends of the guest,” Burke said.

The man was not identified, and Sundberg, who did not immediately respond to requests for comment, said the investigation is ongoing as next of kin are notified of the death.
