Twenty police vehicles responded to the Forum Shopping Center near U.S. Highway 20 and 27th Street on Thursday afternoon for a man experiencing a mental health crisis. No crimes were committed and no arrests were made, police said.
The man was considering harming himself with a gun at his work, but law enforcement were able to successfully coax him away from the firearm, said Sheila Miller, the Bend Police spokesperson.
The man called dispatch himself shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday, and police instructed two businesses in the shopping center to lock down for about half an hour, Miller said. The call prompted a large police presence in the shopping center, including community service officers, drones and detectives, Miller said. The man was eventually taken to the Deschutes County Stabilization Center for treatment.
Miller confirmed the incident did not happen at the Safeway in the shopping center, which was the scene of a deadly shooting in August 2022.
