A plane crash in a remote area near Madras on Sunday killed at least one person dead, authorities said Monday.
Authorities have yet to identify any victims. At least one person has been confirmed dead, according to a preliminary report from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Emergency personnel responded to the area 5.5 miles southeast of Madras after receiving a 911 call at around 7:40 p.m Sunday, a news release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies say the plane, a single-engine Piper PA-32, had departed from Aurora, Oregon, and was on its way to Idaho.
“Due to the extent of the crash there were no survivors,” the news release said. “Names and other pertinent details of who was on board will not be released until identity can be confirmed and family is notified.”
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the crash, the news release said.
“The number of people on board is unknown at this time,” the FAA said in a news release.
Deputies located the plane with the help of officials from Bonneville Power Administration, the sheriff’s office said.
A company power line went out of service shortly after 3 p.m. on Sunday, according to Kevin Wingert, a spokesman for Bonneville Power.
A line crew responded to the area to repair the outage. While leaving the area at around 7:30 p.m., crew members found the downed aircraft, which “apparently had struck the static wire,” Wingert said. They called 911.
