MCMINNVILLE — Despite ending its season with a 47-32 loss to No. 6 South Albany in the 3rd/5th place game Saturday evening, the No. 5 Redmond girls basketball team had its highest finish at the state tournament in program history.

The Panthers, the champions of the Intermountain Conference, finished fifth at the Class 5A state tournament at Linfield University while getting their first-ever berth in the semifinals after beating No. 3 Wilsonville in the quarterfinals Thursday afternoon.

In the final game in the tournament against South Albany (22-7 overall), Redmond (22-6) was led by Freya Snow. The freshman was named Redmond’s Player of the Game after finishing with eight points. Sophomore Mylaena Norton finished with six points and junior Aspen Morris finished with five points and three rebounds.

The RedHawks were led by their Player of the Game, Taylor Donaldson, who finished with 19 points and three blocks in the win over the Panthers to claim the third-place trophy.

Redmond junior Dylan Cheney was named to the tournament’s second team (joining Mountain View seniors Kasey Booster and Avery Andrews). Cheney’s 20 points were key in the Panthers’ 45-39 overtime win over Wilsonville to advance to the semifinals. Redmond also came home with the Sportsmanship award.

No. 1 Silverton, which defeated Redmond 48-29 in the semifinals, beat No. 2 Crater 61-60 in overtime to win the Class 5A state championship late Saturday night.
