The sun was out for the Bend High softball team’s home opener, and the Lava Bears shined, picking up their first two wins of the season.
In Saturday’s doubleheader against North Medford, the Lava Bears rallied from a 5-0 hole after the first inning to win 11-6 in the first game, then senior pitcher Addisen Fisher pitched a shutout in the second game to win 6-0.
“We have a young team and yesterday was just shaking out the jitters,” Fisher said.
“Today was just good vibes. We didn’t feel beat even though we were down five after the first inning. When we started scoring, I knew we were going to be unstoppable.”
The Lava Bears reached the semifinals the past two seasons — 6A in 2022 and 5A in 2023 — but came up a win short of reaching their first title game appearance.
After falling 9-2 to Sherwood in the first game of the season, the Lava Bears picked up a sweep of North Medford, a Class 6A quarterfinal team last season, in their home opener on Saturday for their first two wins of the season.
“It is important to have a mind like a goldfish,” Fisher said. “Sometimes you are going to get beat and sometimes you are going to do really good.”
Being able to bounce back after a rough stretch is a good sign moving forward for Bend (2-1 overall), which had three freshmen — Cassidy Sandgren, Megan Malinowski and Emily Lauerman — in its starting lineup against North Medford (1-2).
“I felt like we needed that,” said junior Taylor Aldrich. “Our energy was a lot better today. I’m proud of everyone on the team, especially the freshmen, for stepping up. This is a game of failure and it is going to happen. The way you go about it and not getting down on yourself is a good way to stay up as a team.”
In the Lava Bears’ 11-6 win in the first game, The Lava Bears dug out of a 5-0 hole after the first inning. Junior pitcher Taylor Aldrich tallied three hits and drove in four runs to lead the offense. Getting the start in the circle, the right-hander struck out four while giving up five runs.
Sophomore Mackenzie Shaughnessy drove in three runs on one hit and junior shortstop Isabelle Lauerman and Fischer each scored three runs.
In the second game, Fisher’s RBI double to take 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning was all the Lava Bears needed to secure the sweep.
Fisher — Oregon’s two-time Gatorade Player of the Year, the nation’s top-ranked high school softball player, according to Extra Inning Softball, who is off to pitch at UCLA after graduating — pitched seven shutout innings, giving up just two hits while striking out 11 batters without a single walk.
In the winter, Fisher was in the lab developing a new pitch, a curveball, for her arsenal, which already included a fastball, drop ball and changeup. All four pitches were firing on all cylinders against the Black Tornados.
“I finally developed a curveball and that was working really well,” said Fisher, who also tallied three hits and drove in three runs in the second game. “Everything was working in my favor. Hopefully I can keep it up the rest of the season.”
Lauerman finished with four hits, scored three runs and drove in another from her lead-off spot in the second game. Senior center fielder Bryanna Schaefer and Aldrich also drove home runs in the 6-0 win.
The Lava Bears return to the diamond at 4:30 p.m. Monday when they host Canby.
