Take a hike
If you want a taste of the High Desert, here it is. A portion of the 750-mile Oregon Desert Trail runs right through The Badlands Wilderness. At 2.7 miles each way, Flatiron Rock in The Badlands is a jaunt through ancient juniper and incredible lava rock formations east of Bend. On clear days, the rock’s upper portions offer great views of Mount Jefferson, Hood and more. Cooler temps offer prime hiking: When the weather is warm, the sandy trail can soften. Make sure you’re up for a desert jaunt by being well-prepared with sufficient layering, sturdy shoes, sunscreen and water.
From the eastern edge of Bend, drive east 13.5 miles on U.S. Highway 20 and turn left into the trailhead parking area. bendbulletin.us/badlands.

If you’re looking for a taste of nature closer to Bend, 981-acre Shevlin Park on the west side never disappoints. The cold waters of Tumalo Creek burble through the park, where the greener shades of spring are already beginning to show. Take the lower trail that parallels the creek or the longer loop above, or stick to the pavement like so many families with bikes and strollers opt to do.
Shevlin Park is at 18920 NW Shevlin Park Road, Bend. Contact: bendparksandrec.org/park/shevlin-park.
