Bend Police saved a woman from human trafficking and sex crimes after she texted a national human trafficking hotline from a hotel room in the early hours of Thursday morning, police said.

The 31-year-old woman texted the National Human Trafficking Hotline just before 1 a.m. Thursday that she was being held against her will and forced to perform sexual acts for money in a hotel room in Bend, said Bend Police spokeswoman, Shelia Miller.

The hotline alerted Deschutes County 911 dispatch around 2 a.m., Miller said. Police tried to contact the woman at the room at Red Lion Inn & Suites near NE Butler Market Road and NE Third Street, but they were unsuccessful, Miller said. So, officers knocked on the hotel room and announced themselves.

The woman answered the door, and, around 4 a.m., police arrested 33-year-old Orlando Smith, of Vancouver, Washington, who is now being charged with fourth degree assault and promoting prostitution.

The woman, who is from Salem, told police Smith had punched her several times and that he had forced her to engage in sexual acts with multiple men over the course of two days, Miller said. Law enforcement found $1,000 in Smith’s possession and an ad for the woman online.

The Bulletin does not identify the victims of alleged sex crimes.

Smith has been charged in Deschutes County Circuit Court and an arraignment is scheduled for Friday. Upon arrest, Smith was also cited for a warrant for a traffic-related offense in Salem.

He was no longer Deschutes County jail as of Monday, according to jail records.
