Dick Higgins memorial services to be livestreamed Thursday

Dick Higgins, a WWII veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor, died on March 19, 2024, at the age of 102 surrounded by three generations of his family.

But it’s not just those Higgins is survived by that mourn his passing. Higgins’ death has struck a cord throughout Central Oregon, whose citizens and veterans have rallied to coordinate three official services — two of which can be viewed through livestream — to honor Higgins on Thursday,March 28.

Here is the schedule of events for Thursday:

Bend Heroes Memorial in Brooks Park

The Bend Heroes Foundation will be honoring Dick Higgins at 8 a.m. in a similar fashion to the service held annually on Dec. 7 for Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler’s “Dick Higgins Day” proclamation and Ted Lyster’s “Pearl Harbor” poem will be read during a brief ceremony.

Eastmont ChurchA public memorial service will be held for Higgins at 11 a.m. at Eastmont Church, 62425 Eagle Road, Bend. Crowds are expected, and the service can be viewed on YouTube at bendbulletin.us/higginsservice.

Deschutes Memorial Gardens

After the public memorial at Eastmont Church, there will be a procession to Deschutes Memorial Gardens, where a military funeral service with full honors will take place at 1 p.m. This service will also be livestreamed at bendbulletin.us/higginsmilitary.
