Prep baseball: Central Oregon teams find success in out-of-state tournaments

Five Central Oregon baseball teams flew south in search of warmer weather and spent their spring breaks playing baseball against out-of-state opponents.

The Mountain View, Caldera and Summit baseball teams all traveled to San Diego to play in the Lions Baseball Tournament. The Cougars, the Wolfpack and the Storm all had winning records in the four games played in Southern California. The Bend, Redmond and Sisters baseball team traveled to Arizona to play in the Coach Bob Invitational tournament.

Mountain View won all four of its games against California teams. The Cougars started with a 9-7 win over San Fernando on Monday; a 6-4 win over Hemet on Tuesday; a 10-4 win over Otay Ranch on Wednesday, before finishing the trip with a 7-1 win over Rancho Buena Vista.

In the Cougars’ win over San Fernando, senior infielder Connor Crum hit three doubles and scored three runs. In their win over Otay Ranch, junior Brady Kennedy finished with three RBI at the plate while also striking out seven batters 5⅓ innings on the pitcher’s mound. In two pitching appearances, senior Gavin Derr threw 5⅓ perfect innings while striking out 10 batters.

Caldera won three of its four games, with victories over El Capitan (9-7) on Monday and wins over Canyon Crest Academy (10-2) and Nevada’s Bishop Manogue (4-3).

In the Wolfpack’s 10-2 win over Canyon Crest, sophomore Brody Whitcomb finished with a home run and four RBIs. Sophomore Isaac Price pitched a complete game, allowing just two earned runs on four hits. Junior outfielder Jack Bents finished the weekend with six hits on 10 at bats, three doubles and four stolen bases.

Summit won its final two games in San Diego after starting the tournament with a loss and a tie in its first two games.

In the Storm’s 14-2 win over San Ysidro, senior infielder Finn Edwards hit a home run and finished three RBIs and scored two runs of his own. Then the Storm closed out the tournament with a 3-0 win over Roosevelt, in which junior Alex Via struck out eight Roughrider batters in four innings of work.

The Lava Bears picked up just one win at the Coach Bob Invitational, but it came in thrilling fashion. Against Piedra Vista of New Mexico, the Lava Bears were down 8-1 going into the seventh inning. Bend scored five runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to pull off the 9-8 victory.

Redmond’s lone win in Arizona came against Prospect Ridge (Colorado), in which senior pitcher Johnny Brabb struck out nine batters while allowing one earned run in 5⅓ innings, while senior Joseph Teixeira hit two doubles and drove home two runs in the Panthers’ 8-3 win.

Sisters started the Coach Bob Invitational with two losses then rallied to win its next two games. In the Outlaws’ 10-0 win over Doherty (Colorado), senior pitcher Brody Fischer pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six batters. In their 15-1 win over Shadow Mountain (Arizona), sophomore Trent Gordon allowed one earned run while striking out five in four innings of work on the mound.
