World-class jazz guitarist John Scofield brings his trio to Bend

We could fill this entire newspaper section with a list of John Scofield’s artistic accomplishments over the past five decades.

This, after all, is a guy who left the prestigious Berklee College of Music to record with innovative jazz trumpeter Chet Baker and, soon after, Charles Mingus. It’s the guy who started releasing albums in 1977 and has since built one of the most respected catalogs in jazz.

Scofield is the guy who famously played in none other than Miles Davis’ band for a few years in the 1980s. He spent the 21st century racking up nine Grammy nominations (and three wins). Along the way, he has played with everyone from Phil Lesh to Bill Evans to Medeski, Martin & Wood to Herbie Hancock to Gov’t Mule.

He is a giant of the genre, widely considered one of the “big three” guitarists of his generation to fuse jazz with other genres, alongside Bill Frisell and Pat Metheny.

Which is why it’s so cool that Scofield is playing the Tower Theatre on Wednesday, April 10. He’ll be joined by bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Bill Stewart, who also play on Scofield’s most recent album “Uncle John’s Band,” which came out last year. Wide-ranging and highly listenable, it’s a collection of Scofield’s swinging, funky originals and a few jazz standards, plus cool covers of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Grateful Dead and his old pal Davis.

“I feel like we can go anywhere,” he says of the Scofield, Archer and Stewart trio. We’re fortunate they’ve chosen to come here!

John Scofield Trio: 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, doors open 7 p.m., $44.75-$56.25, Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall Street, Bend, towertheatre.org.
