A fire started from weed burning destroyed a barn in Tumalo on Saturday.
Bend Fire & Rescue was dispatched to the fire on 97th Street around 6:30 p.m., where a homeowner had discovered his detached barn on fire and called 911. Multiple agencies responded and kept the fire from spreading to nearby vehicles and buildings, but the barn and its contents were considered a total loss of $75,000, according to Bend Fire & Rescue. No animals were in the barn at the time.
According to Bend Fire & Rescue, the property’s occupants had been burning weeds with a propane torch against the side of the barn earlier in the day, and while the barn did not immediately catch fire, the wood behind the barn’s metal siding caught and smoldered for several hours before being noticed.
All burning is required to be 10 feet from buildings or other combustibles, according to the fire department. Find burning regulations and helpful burning tips at www.bendoregon.gov/burninginfo.
