Intel had another round of layoffs last week, eliminating an unspecified number of jobs in its sales and marketing group.

“Our goal is to best reflect the markets and customers we serve. We continue to evaluate our structure through this lens to best support the dynamic demands of our market and customer-focused initiatives,” Intel said in a brief statement acknowledging the layoffs, which were first reported by the online news site CRN.

The company declined to say how many jobs it is cutting or disclose how many people in Oregon lost their jobs. Its marketing group does have a considerable presence in Hillsboro.

Intel held a succession of layoffs last year as its workforce shrank from about 132,000 to 125,000 over the course of 2023. The company was responding to a steep drop in revenue.

The chipmaker never reported how many jobs it cut in Oregon, where its overall workforce actually increased by 1,000 jobs last year, to 23,000. Washington County is Intel’s largest site anywhere in the world.

Intel’s financial picture improved considerably in the latter part of 2023 but the company dismayed investors last week when it reported a $7 billion operating loss at its semiconductor factories. Intel was reporting financial results for its factory business for the first time as it prepares to offer contract manufacturing services to other chip companies.

Intel is in the midst of a decade-long turnaround project, seeking to restore its technological edge and profit margins after losing its leadership position to manufacturers in Asia.
