The number of wins in housing in Bend can be muted by the noise of the groans of anyone looking for a home. The prices are good for sellers, not so good for buyers.
It can be especially hard if you need a home with special requirements, such as for people with limited mobility. Stairs can make half a home impractical or an every day ordeal.
The limited housing available in Bend for people with disabilities was identified as a problem area for Bend in the city’s analysis of its fair housing challenges.
But Bend did get a recent win. It’s thanks to a mix of grants and credits, in part, channeled through the state’s housing department, Oregon Housing and Community Services. Total funding for what is called Nine Peaks is some $10 million.
It will mean 45 new units will be built for people with disabilities, seniors and families. There will be units with one, two and three bedrooms. The development is sponsored by Housing Works, which is the housing authority for Central Oregon counties, specializing in low- and moderate income housing.
A rendering of the planned design may not inspire poets, but the doors in the building will lead to homes for people who very much need them. That is a win.
