Two people died Friday morning after their Dodge Durango went left the roadway and crashed into a tree on Knott Road,  according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office on Saturday identified the two killed on the crash as driver Bobby J. Jones, 64, of Gilchrist, and passenger Tami M. Jones, 61, also of Gilchrist.

Bend Fire & Rescue was first on the scene and extracted a trapped passenger from the back seat of the Durango. The passenger was taken to St. Charles Bend with serious injuries. The driver and front-seat passenger were declared dead at the scene.

The Durango, traveling east around 10:45 a.m., attempted to pass a commercial vehicle by crossing the center line, according to the sheriff’s office. It clipped the vehicle while returning to the eastbound lane of travel, almost hitting a pickup truck traveling west. The Durango then drove off the road and struck the tree.

Deputies determined the driver of the Durango was at fault.

Knott Road was temporarily shut down during the investigation.
