Prep softball: Caldera reaches new heights with sweep of Ridgeview

In three games this week against Ridgeview, the Wolfpack — playing in their second varsity season — knocked off multiple milestones, and hope to knock off a couple of more during the season.

With a three-game sweep of Ridgeview, Caldera matched last year’s win total (three), exceeded its total Intermountain Conference wins from a year ago (two) and gave the Wolfpack the first league sweep in program history.

“This is pretty special for us,” said junior catcher Morgan Voll. “Everyone is doing so much better and putting in the work. It is amazing to see it all come together in games.”

To get the program’s first sweep, the Wolfpack (8-7, 3-3 IMC) needed a late rally to get past the Ravens (5-7, 3-3). With the score deadlocked at 1 Friday evening, the bottom of the batting order came through for Caldera.

Voll started the rally with a double.

Then, with two outs, junior Taya Brown doubled down the left field line to score two runs. Sophomore third baseman Brynn Wilson then singled, driving home a run to make it a 5-1 ball game.

“Everyone contributed one through nine (in the lineup)”, said Caldera coach Lisa Kienzle. “Actually one through 15. It didn’t matter if you were top of the lineup, bottom of the lineup, we had everyone come up with clutch hits.”

Given how Brooklyn Chapin pitched throughout the three-game series, a four-run lead was more than enough insurance.

Chapin spun magic in the circle in all three games. The freshman pitcher appeared in the three games, throwing two one-hitters. In total, Chapin threw 13 innings, allowed seven hits, gave up only one earned run and had 20 strikeouts. In the sweep-clinching game Friday, she struck out eight and allowed just one hit, without giving up an earned run.

“The last two weeks she has been really dialed in,” said Caldera coach Lisa Kienzle. “We have this mentality where we tell the girls to bring out their dog; bring out their night. The last two weeks she has done that.”

The breed of dog that Chapin channels when she is on the mound might come as a shock to some. “I would say I’m a chihuahua,” Chapin said. “I’m small but I’m fierce. When I’m mad it comes out the most.”

The thought of an improved season began to creep into the mind of Voll during the winter, before practices had started, when Chapin invited her to her bullpen at her house for a pitching season.

It was then that the junior catcher saw a slew of pitches — a fastball, drop curve, a rise ball, change up and drop ball — that were always hitting her mitt.

“The first day working with her, I was like ‘yeah, she can pitch,’” Voll said. “I knew it was going to be a good season for us.”

Two series into IMC play, the Wolfpack find themselves squarely in the playoff hunt with three series remaining. With Bend High being the heavy favorite to win the IMC once again, the only other team the Wolfpack find themselves looking up to in the standings is Mountain View.

The Wolfpack and the Cougars begin their three-game series at Mountain View at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“After this week, and getting the sweep, we now have a shot,” Voll said. “Now we are thinking playoffs. We are hoping to pull through here.”
