The Toxhards bring anthemic, ambitious pop-rock to Silver Moon Brewing

- The Toxhards, from Los Angeles, will visit Bend's Silver Moon Brewing on Friday.
Take a scroll through The Toxhards’ website and you’ll find a number of lofty claims:
– That the Los Angeles band is “breathing a new life into the long-lost genre of rock n’ roll.”
– That it’s “the future of alt rock.”
– That The Toxhards’ sound is “bound to leave you in need of a change of pants.”
– That that sound is “half psych, half prog, half rock theatre.” (I’m no math major, but I’m not sure that one quite adds up.)
You can’t blame a band for trying to capture our ever-shrinking attention spans, of course. And here’s the thing: The Toxhards are good, they’re different and they’re interesting. Are they breathing new life into rock ‘n’ roll? Who knows? That remains to be seen, really. But what they are doing is playing big, anthemic, dizzyingly ambitious and ridiculously catchy songs, and they’re doing so with great skill and swagger.
Put it another way: How often do you come across a band that reminds you of Queen? The Toxhards remind me of Queen. That’s a serious compliment.
It should be noted, too, that their website also says this: “Above all, The Toxhards remain today as they were when they started: 4 friends having fun and making music.” And that’s pretty sweet.
The Toxhards, with Mari & the Dream: 7 p.m. Friday, $12, Silver Moon Brewing, 24 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend, silvermoonbrewing.com.
