Celebrate Día del Niño or swap out your books, puzzles this weekend

Central Oregon family-friendly and kid activities are wide-ranging this weekend.

Take part in the local book or puzzle drives. Walk through Sawyer Park on Bend’s northside and discuss the world of birds. Or celebrate Día del Niño — Children’s Day — with an all-ages fiesta.

Children’s Book Drive

Clear out your old, overstuffed bookshelf by donating some of those gently used children’s and young adult books. Drop them off at Newport Avenue Market during the middle of the day Saturday and the books will go to kids in foster care and Head Start or donated to shelters and food pantries across Central Oregon.

Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; free; Newport Avenue Market, 1121 NW Newport Ave., Bend; bendchapternsdar.com or 541-382-3940.

Nature Kids — Flying Wild

The Deschutes Land Trust and Karen Walsh will lead a group of kids and their family members, who would like to attend, on a nature walk at Camp Polk Meadow Preserve focused on birds. The walk is great for kids ages 5-10 with a grownup in tow. Kids will learn about bird watching, practice using binoculars, and discover how birds communicate and find snacks. Walsh develops and delivers conservation education programs for the land trust.

Registration is helpful, but not required. Upon registration, attendees will receive event details and directions leading up to the outing.

Saturday 10:30 a.m.-noon; RSVP; Camp Polk Meadow Preserve, Cemetery Road, Sisters; deschuteslandtrust.org or 541-389-7275.

Día del Niño Community Fiesta

The Bend Nazarene Church will have a lineup of carnival games and prizes to win. Bring family and friends to enjoy traditional piñatas, games, raffles, community, free food and music.

Sunday noon-2 p.m.; free; Bend Naz, 1270 NE 27th St., Bend; bendnaz.churchcenter.com or 541-382-5496.

Gently Used Puzzle Swap

Similar to the book drive, bring in gently used puzzles anytime this week to Paulina Springs Books in Sisters, but this time, get a voucher per puzzle to use on swap day Wednesday. New puzzles will be 10% off all day long on swap day, no cost for swapping puzzles.

Wednesday 5:30-6 p.m.; free; Paulina Springs Books, 252 W. Hood Ave., Sisters; paulinaspringsbooks.com or 541-549-0866.

This article was updated April 26 to correct the location of the Nature Kids program. It will be taking place at Camp Polk Meadow Preserve, not Sawyer Park.
