PRINEVILLE — Over two days at Meadow Lakes Golf Course, Saylor Gillet pulled away from the field to win the Intermountain Conference girls golf championship and lead Summit to a conference title.
After the first 18 holes on Monday, the Summit senior had built a 10-stroke lead over the rest of the field by shooting a 78 (6-over par). Then on Tuesday, through windy and rainy conditions that got worse as the tournament reached its final stages, Gillet upped her game, leaving no chance for anyone to catch her.
Gillet carded a 1-under 71 on Tuesday to finish at 149, 25 strokes ahead of second-place Anna Latimer, of Caldera.
“I was really good about how I played,” Gillet said. “I didn’t play the best in my first round, and I was really trying to improve on the second day. And it worked, so I’m really excited about it.”
Gillet said that the night between the first and second rounds before falling asleep, she was playing each of the 18 holes at Meadow Lakes in her mind, thinking about what she could have done differently earlier that day while mapping out what she wanted to do on the second day.
After two birdies, a bogey and a double bogey on the front nine on Tuesday, Gillet found another gear on the back nine. She had three birdies between the 10th and 14th holes, then parred the final four holes for the 71, a seven-stroke improvement from Monday’s round.
“I was really determined to play well and do my best,” Gillet said. “Mentally I definitely stayed focused. I didn’t focus on the bad shots, but just stayed in the moment.”
Summit, the reigning 5A state champions, had all five of its golfers finish in the top 10. Junior Macy McAlister finished fifth (89-91—180, +19), junior Clare Crawley (100-99—199, +27) finished sixth, and seniors Aubrey Olinger (103-104—207) and Eva Dauenhauer (109-98—207) tied for ninth place.
Summit finished with a team score of 729, ahead of second place Ridgeview (839) and third-place Caldera (852). The Storm clinched a team spot in the two-day, 36-hole Class 5A state golf championships at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, May 13-14. Summit will be vying for its 12th state team title.
“It was rough conditions out there the last two days and they did a really good job at battling through it,” said Summit coach Spencer Gillet. “I told them to swing easy and not to worry about the numbers.
Latimer (89-85—174, +13) improved on Tuesday to finish second behind Gillet and clinch an individual spot in the state championships. Latimer, a senior, will also play in the regional tournament next Tuesday at Aspen Lakes Golf Course in Sisters to help the Caldera team advance to the state championships.
Redmond sophomore Payton Richardson (88-87—175, +15) also qualified for the state championships for the second straight season. As a freshman in 2023, Richardson finished 18th in state.
Two teams — and four individuals — will have an additional opportunity to advance to the state championships at the regional tournament at Aspen Lakes.
Ridgeview, which was led by senior fourth-place finisher Mya Oakes (91-85—176, +16), and Caldera will each compete in the regional round as teams. Four additional golfers — Bend High junior Taylor Wirth (104-102—206, +30) and freshman Lola Smith (127-133—260, +61), along with Mountain View sophomores Daisy Kenel (113-107—220, +35) and Isabella Hugulet (117-114—231, +42) will try to qualify for state as individuals.
