- Americana-jam all-star group The High Hawks play Domino Room Wednesday, May 8.
You know how they say Major League Baseball is better when the New York Yankees are good? Or college football is at its best when Michigan is relevant? Maybe you do, if you’re a sports fan. If you’re not, it may make no sense, but that’s OK.
The point is that those sentiments can also be applied to the Midtown Ballroom, the Domino Room and The Annex, which share a building at 51 NW Greenwood Ave., in Bend. Because of their size, their prominent location and their history in the region, Central Oregon’s music scene feels more vibrant when these venues are busy hosting concerts.
And boy are they busy this week. Below are the details; you can learn more and buy tickets at midtownballroom.com.
For the hip-hop heads
For years, Krizz Kaliko came through Bend to open shows for his friend and former label mate Tech N9ne. More recently, he’s been headlining his own shows, bringing to town his punchy, hook-heavy rap music, which he frequently fuses with rock, country, pop and more. Dude has collaborated with artists like Eminem, Jelly Roll, Kendrick Lamar and Korn; a native of Kansas City, he’s kind of like the Midwestern E-40. Openers include Locksmith, Vin Jay, Hobbyist and The Clumzy’s. 8 p.m. Thursday, doors open 7 p.m., $20, Domino Room.
Shrek Rave
Themed dance nights are clearly becoming more and more popular, whether they’re dedicated to a particular famous artist’s music or an era (think “‘80s night”) or whatever. Here’s a new one to me: Shrek Rave, a — you guessed it — dance party themed around the movie “Shrek.” Does this mean it features just music from the “Shrek” soundtrack? Shrek costumes? Both? Who knows? The poster embraces the silliness: “IT’S DUMB JUST COME HAVE FUN.” 9 p.m. Friday, $20, Domino Room.
Latin music party
Above the Midtown Ballroom is a small bar-sized spot known as The Annex, and that’s where Saturday night’s Cinco de Mayo party, Club Latino Vibez, will go down. DJ Cruz and DJ Mistico will be spinning cumbia, corridos, rancheras, bachatas, reggaeton, urbano, salsa and hip-hop all night long. 9 p.m. Saturday, $10, The Annex.
A little bit country
For me, the highlight of last summer’s Big Ponderoo festival in Sisters was a headlining set by Canadian singer-songwriter Corb Lund, who — alongside his band, The Hurtin’ Albertans — turned in an incendiary set of traditional country, twang-rock, cowboy songs, honky tonk and so on. Lund’s newest album, “El Viejo,” is full of songs about gamblers, brawlers and drunks and is dedicated to his old pal, Canadian country legend Ian Tyson. It’s also excellent. Branson Anderson opens. 7:30 p.m. Monday, doors open 7 p.m., $25, Domino Room.
A little bit rock ‘n’ roll
I’ll be honest: I had not heard of Peach Pit before this show was announced. But that means nothing; the Canadian pop-rock band sold out the cavernous Midtown Ballroom weeks ago. If you have a ticket, enjoy! Annie DiRusso opens. 8 p.m. Tuesday, doors open 7 p.m., SOLD OUT, Midtown Ballroom.
The Americana supergroup
You may not know the band name The High Hawks, but you probably know some of its members: Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon. Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth. Adam Greuel of Horseshoes & Hand Grenades. Chad Staehly of Hard Working Americans. Together, these veterans of the rootsy rock ‘n’ jam-band scene play eminently enjoyable Americana music that spills over with mellow good vibes. Brad Parsons opens. 7 p.m. Wednesday, doors open 6 p.m., $20, Domino Room.
