Summit Invitational track and field meet canceled due to weather

The Summit Invitational track and field meet scheduled for Saturday at Bend’s Summit High School has been canceled due to inclement weather, according to Summit track and field coach Dave Turnbull.

The longtime annual meet was set to host 14 teams, including 10 from Central Oregon.

Turnbull noted in an email that with a 90% chance of rain, temperatures forecasted in the low 40s, and possible snow on the track Saturday morning, he made the difficult decision to cancel the popular meet.

“I feel that I’ll wake up to snow on Saturday morning, we’ll shovel and get ready and then be inundated with rain,” Turnbull wrote.

“This is no way to prepare our athletes for the upcoming district meets the following week. In the interest of the athletes, coaches and our wonderful volunteers, we have decided to cancel the invite.”

All Central Oregon track and field programs will have their district championships next week, ranging from May 9 to May 11.

The Class 5A Intermountain Conference championships are set for Summit, May 10-11.

The OSAA track and field state championships are set for Eugene’s Hayward Field, May 16-18, a week earlier than normal because the Prefontaine Classic — featuring the top professional track and field athletes from across the world — is set for May 25 at Hayward.
