Redmond’s Spring Home and Garden Show entertains and educates

REDMOND — Chef Kimba Christian was at the Spring Home and Garden Show Saturday morning to sell pots and pans, but make no mistake, she was really there to have fun.

“I’m going to fry you an egg,” she told her small yet engaged audience, spraying nothing but fat-free olive oil into the pan.

“Watch when that’s done cooking. It’s so fast and so clean.”

As the egg cooked, she reviewed the benefits of cooking with Kitchen Craft’s stainless steel pans. Easy cleanup, burn guards and durability are just some of the features Christian emphasized.

A minute later, she returned to the egg, seamlessly flipping it in the air without so much as a spatula to loosen it from the pan.

“It’s as easy as that,” she said.

Christian was one of more than 200 vendors at the annual Spring Home and Garden Show, which is taking place this weekend at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center. It’s an opportunity for local businesses to display their craft. There were booths for everything, from massage chairs to artists, custom deck manufacturers, honey farmers and shower refurbishing.

Throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the event usually sees 10,000 visitors.

It’s also a chance for Central Oregonians to browse “neat things you don’t just see at Lowes and Home Depot,” said Tiffany Whitehurst, who had just arrived at the show. Whitehurst said she tries to come every year because it’s fun to browse the booths.

The early May showers that have plagued the Bend-Redmond area for the last week also didn’t appear to deter anyone at the event. Although some of the booths were still outdoors, the interior of the expo center was crowded with hundreds of people milling around.

“It’s a nice day to be doing this too with the rain,” said Bill Welch. “Otherwise, we’d be outdoors doing something.”

Welch and his wife Monica have lived in Bend for the last 12 years. Monica Welch said she likes coming to the Spring Home and Garden Show because it’s interesting to see what is new and innovative since since the couple built their home more than a decade ago. It’s also a great place to brainstorm future renovations, she said.

Of course, no home and garden show would be complete without OSU Master Gardeners, one of Central Oregon’s leading gardening educators.

Vickie Minor, who has coordinated the Master Gardeners booth for the last 20 years, said she’s been planning for the event since July.

“It’s our opportunity to reach so many hundreds of people who think you can’t grow anything in Central Oregon,” Minor said. “I hear it all the time. I’m teaching a class this afternoon on our climate — and yes, it’s challenging — but if you garden here, you are the master gardener.”

The Spring Home and Garden show is open through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
