A Bend man was sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison for possessing methamphetamine and a loaded firearm after hotel staff found a gallon bag of meth in his Bend hotel room, authorities said.

Dana Lee Johnson, 41, was sentenced to 151 months in prison and five years post-prison supervision.

In March 2021, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office responded to Tetherow Resort after hotel staff found a gallon bag of methamphetamine, a safe and hypodermic needles. The safe contained more methamphetamine. Johnson, who had an outstanding felony warrant for failing to register as a sex offender, was the last guest to stay in the room.

Johnson contacted the hotel about the safe he left behind and soon after, officers stopped and arrested him when Johnson was traveling in a rental vehicle. Investigators found over $7,000 in cash, a rental car agreement in Johnson’s name, a backpack containing heroin and methamphetamine and a loaded semi-automatic pistol.

In October 2023, Johnson pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute it. Johnson had also been charged with possessing heroin with the intent to distribute it and carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime. Those charges were dismissed.
