A man overdosed on drugs in the Deschutes County jail Sunday, and deputies revived him with naloxone, the sheriff’s office said.

The man was being booked on suspicion of second-degree theft and criminal conspiracy when he collapsed, Sgt. Jason Wall, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, said in a news release Tuesday.

“Deputies responded and found the subject was not breathing and did not have a pulse,” Wall said.

The overdose-reversal drug naloxone was administered immediately. The man began breathing and regained consciousness, Wall said. Deputies administered additional doses of naloxone and the man was taken to St. Charles Bend for further treatment.

“I’m proud of the quick actions taken by our teammates, which undoubtedly saved this inmate’s life,” Sheriff L. Shane Nelson said in the news release. “I work with great people trained to respond to medical emergencies, as demonstrated by their proficiency in response to reverse the outcome of this overdose.”

All sheriff’s office patrol deputies carry multiple doses of naloxone with them and in their vehicles, Wall said.
