- A prescribed burn in the Deschutes National Forest.
A prescribed burn west of Bend sent large plumes of smoke into the air near NorthWest Crossing on Thursday. Residents impacted by the smoky conditions are advised to keep windows closed at night to avoid smoke impacts.
Up to 431 acres are planned to be burned on private land Thursday and Friday according to Central Oregon Fire Info, a website that provides information on prescribed burns and wildfire in the area. The burn area is approximately a half mile west of Shevlin Park along NW Shevlin Park and Johnson roads.
Jaimie Olle, a spokesperson for the Deschutes National Forest, said the burn will be conducted on Friday only if “conditions remain favorable.”
This cross-boundary prescribed burn is being implemented under the Wyden Amendment, which authorizes the U.S. Forest Service to enter into cooperative agreements with private landowners to protect and restore natural resources on non-Forest Service lands.
The Forest Service was also conducting a prescribed burn Thursday on 269 acres of land west of Sunriver along Forest Road 41.
