Satou Sabally won’t be available when the Dallas Wings open their 2024 WNBA regular season on Wednesday, but she’s expected to be available when Germany competes in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
The former Oregon Ducks’ star suffered a shoulder injury while playing for the German national team in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in February. She underwent a procedure on Feb. 20.
Wings head coach Latricia Trammell said Sabally has been attending practices and they hope to have her back around the Olympic break. Wings CEO Greg Bibb said Sabally is on schedule with her rehab. Sabally is expected to play for the German National Team in the Olympics after the team qualified for the Olympics for the first time in its history.
“We expect Satou to come back around the Olympic break, be ready to compete for Germany in the Olympics, and then see her for sure in a Dallas Wings jersey over the final 15 games of the regular-season post-Olympic break,” Bibb told reporters in April.
The WNBA will pause its season for the Olympics, from July 26 to Aug. 11.
Sabally won the league’s Most Improved Player Award and finished fifth in MVP voting after posting a career year in 2023. She averaged 18.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game in 2023, all career-highs. Sabally also had 14 double-doubles and shot 36.1% from behind the arc, a vast improvement from her 23.3% in 2022.
She helped the Wings reach the WNBA semifinals where they lost to eventual champion Las Vegas. Sabally earned her second selection to the WNBA All-Star Team in 2023 and was named to the All-WNBA first team for the first time in her career.
