- Redmond’s Georgia Koch, center, finishes first in the girls 400-meter race, ahead of Caldera’s Jaymi Dickinson, left, and Summit’s Lia Cooper, right, during the 5A IMC Championships on Saturday at Summit High School in Bend.
With Intermountain Conference titles and spots at the Class 5A state track and field championships on the line, reigning state champion Summit was in top form with a dominating two-day performance at the IMC championships on Friday and Saturday at Summit.
The Storm boys finished with 222 points, ahead of Mountain View (90), Bend High (88), Caldera (65.5), Ridgeview (41.5) and Redmond (18). The girls finished with 202 points, ahead of Caldera (81), Bend (73), Ridgeview (59), Redmond (57) and Mountain View (51).
“They ran inspired today,” said Summit coach Dave Turnbull. “I think today showed the heart of our program. You see the talent of the program on the scoreboard, but you see the heart of the program with how they finish.”
In total, the Storm, between the boys and the girls, won 15 individual events and won three of the four relays, with three athletes doubling up and winning multiple events.
Freshman Jacqueline Haffner had a strong showing in her first district meet by winning both the high jump (5 feet, 4.25 inches) and the long jump (17-11.25). Senior Noah Goodrich, last year’s 5A triple jump state champion, repeated as IMC champ in both the triple jump (45-4.5) and the long jump (21-2.75).
Senior Hayden Boaz won both distance races, taking both the 1,500 meters (4 minutes, 00.62 seconds) and the 3,000 meters (8:39.10). His time in the 1,500 is believed to have broken an IMC championship record that was set in 1981.
Senior Nate Miller (300-meter hurdles), senior Benjamin Hill (discus), senior Mylon Pofahl (javelin), senior Collin Moore (high jump), junior Abigail Fagan (200), sophomore Sky Knox (800), sophomore Taylin Bowen (1,500), sophomore Sophia Capozzi (3,000) and sophomore Anna Millikan (javelin) all claimed IMC titles during the two-day meet.
Girls hurdles does not disappoint
The two girls hurdles events were perhaps the most compelling events entering the meet. They featured two of the fastest 5A hurdlers in Bend High’s Sara Rivas and Ridgeview’s Kensey Gault, with the two boasting four state titles in the hurdles between them. And the two races did not disappoint.
Gault, who had won two state titles at the 5A meet as a freshman in 2021, ran a blistering 14.36 seconds to win the 100-meter hurdles.
“I usually get into my head before big races,” Gault said. “But today I just stayed calm and stayed composed and just ran how I know I can run.”
Rivas, who won both hurdle events at last year’s state meet, then responded with a win in the 300-meter hurdles, setting a new personal best with a time of 44.19.
Speed kills for Treyden Lucas
Bend’s Treyden Lucas was flying around the track on Friday. Last year’s 5A 400-meter state champion trimmed off over a full second from his title-winning time a year ago with a 48.26 on Saturday. But he wasn’t done.
He also went on to win the 200 meters in 22.48. And when the Lava Bears’ 4×400-meter relay team (of freshman Leif Larwin, junior Theodore Martin and junior Victor Karpstein) were trailing heading into the final lap, Lucas ran past the rest of the field as the anchor to help the Lava Bears to a win with a time of 3:27.84.
“I knew that if our third leg was close to the guy ahead, that I could catch him,” Lucas said. “I tried to stay with him until the last 100 meters, and then I just proved what I can do.”
More event winners
Mountain View had a pair of IMC champions with senior Callahan Corwin winning the boys 100 in a personal best 10.93, and senior Ryden Minisce winning the 110-meter hurdles with a personal best 14.91.
Redmond senior Peyton Stewart won the girls shot put with a toss of 35-2, and freshman Georgia Koch won the girls 400 in a personal best 57.07.
Bend freshman Lily Teel won the triple jump with a leap of 35-4.24 and junior Logan Hartman won the shot put with a toss of 46-7.5.
Caldera junior Dane Giessler repeated as the IMC 800-meter champion with a PR of 1:55.13, while Sage Cramp won the girls pole vault with a mark of 10-8.75.
Ridgeview also had a pair of champions in junior Zowie Nunes in the discus (122-3.25) and senior Tyas Selby, last year’s pole vault state champion, who won the same event with a vault of 14-8.
The Class 5A state championships are set for Eugene’s Hayward Field this Friday and Saturday.
