California folk-rocker Joe Kaplow comes to Bend

- California singer-songwriter Joe Kaplow will play Bend's Silver Moon Brewing Thursday.
Just a few hours up the road in beautiful Portland, you’ll find Fluff & Gravy Records, one of the best labels around for folk, country, Americana music and the like. In recent years, it has released terrific albums by artists like Jeffrey Martin, Margo Cilker, Kassi Valazza, Anna Tivel and Jenny Don’t and the Spurs.
That’s quite a roster!
Next up on the release calendar for Fluff & Gravy: “Posh Poodle Krystal and Toe,” the third full-length from Californian Joe Kaplow, an ace songwriter and distinctive singer whose deeply chilled country-rock sounds like a slow-motion collision between Philly rocker Kurt Vile’s ultra-laid-back vibes and classic, sun-bleached West Coast twang, with more than a hint of psychedelic exploration popping in here and there.
It’s a really good record, which is no great shock, consider the label that’s putting it out. Catch Kaplow live Thursday night at Silver Moon in Bend, where he’ll be joined by Portland’s Mickey Newball and local act Palo Sopraño.
Joe Kaplow, Mickey Newball and Palo Sopraño: 7 p.m. Thursday, $13, Silver Moon Brewing, 24 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend, silvermoonbrewing.com.
