Travis Bazzana sets Oregon State baseball hits record

After sidestepping Darwin Barney to become the Oregon State Beavers Hit King, Travis Bazzana said his pursuit of his mentor’s feats have only just begun.

Still to come: Omaha.

“Now I’ve just got to try to continue to be a leader like Darwin and take them to the national championship like he did,” Bazzana told reporters. “That’s the special part. I want to follow in his footsteps in that way more than anything that happened today.”

But, for at least a day, Bazzana had to settle for Barney’s hits record.

The junior second baseman slapped career hit No. 239 in the second inning of Oregon State’s runaway 15-1 victory over the UCLA Bruins Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium, adding a little history to the Beavers’ commanding series sweep.

Bazzana became OSU’s all-time hits leader, eclipsing Barney’s 17-year record. The historic swing came on a 2-2 count in the bottom of the second inning, when Bazzana ripped a breaking ball to right field for a run-scoring double.

Bazzana has set a cornucopia of records this season — including the Beavers’ career-and single-season home run marks.

As for Sunday’s game, well, it was a laugher from beginning to end. Gavin Turley opened the scoring with a run-scoring single in the first inning, Bazzana pushed the lead to 2-0 with his memorable double, and the floodgates soon opened up.
