D/L Quintet brings cool jazz to Bend

D/L Quintet is led by composers Ruthie Dineen and bassist Andrew Lion.

Another evening of top-shelf live jazz is going down Friday night at One World Center, aka the Unity Spiritual Community of Central Oregon on Bend’s north side.

That’s where you’ll find the D/L Quintet, a group of skilled players led by composers and co-bandleaders Ruthie Dineen (keys) and Andrew Lion (bass) of the critically acclaimed, Oakland-based indie-jazz group Negative Press Project. In the D/L Quintet, they are joined by Joel Behrman (trumpet), Luke Broadbent (guitar) and Adam Carlson (drums), plus special guest Tom Bergeron on tenor sax.

Negative Press Project’s 2023 album “The Victorious Sessions” is “an evolving landscape and a shining example of what happens when talented musicians are not afraid to experiment and push the limits of the native jazz vernacular,” according to All About Jazz. To be clear, Negative Press Project is not performing in Bend, but with Dineen and Lion at the helm, you can expect D/L Quintet to uphold the same high-quality level of musicianship, and not in some cramped club, but an excellent and comfortable listening environment.

D/L Quintet: 7:30 p.m. Friday, doors open 6:15 p.m., $25 online at bendticket.com, One World Center (at Unity Spiritual Community of Central Oregon), 63645 Scenic Drive, Bend, 541-513-1997 or robspo@comcast.net.
