BANKS — Coming into the Class 5A state golf championships, the Summit boys golf team had three goals it wanted to achieve: win a team title, have all five of its golfers place in the top 10, and have an individual champion.

The Storm did not get all three, but came away with two. They won their third consecutive state title (sixth overall) and had all five of their golfers finish in the top 10 in the two-day, 36-hole tournament at Quail Valley Golf Club northwest of Portland.

La Salle’s Jonas Caddell won the individual title as the only golfer to finish under par with a two-day score of 147.

Summit was led by sophomore Bryce Grieb and senior Owen Harper, who each finished in a three-way tie with Wilsonville’s Luke Sidhu for second place. Senior Jakob Hansen finished fifth, while junior Paolo Delia and freshman Bryden Ditty finished tied for ninth.

“I’m fortunate because I have a bunch of kids who love golf and love to work on their game,” said Summit coach Andy Heinly. “This is their sport.”

Finishing with a team score of 607, the Storm finished 19 strokes ahead of second-place La Salle (626) and 45 strokes ahead of third-place Wilsonville (652).

The 2022 6A champs and last year’s 5A champs came into the tournament feeling confident they could deliver the program’s second three-peat. The Storm won three state titles in a row from 2015 to 2017.

“We knew that we could do it,” Grieb said. “We played really well, we have a ton of depth and that is really important.”

After shooting a 77 on Monday, Grieb shot a team-low 74 on the second day. The last six holes the sophomore, and younger brother of the 2022 state champion Brody Grieb, played perhaps his best stretch of golf.

Coming off a double bogey on the challenging 12th hole, Grieb parred five of the final holes and birdied the 17th hole to finish with a two-day score of 151.

“After hole 12, I knew I had to finish strong,” Grieb said. “I just focused on each shot, I definitely got into a groove on those last couple of holes.”

Harper came out hot on the second day, birdying three of his first seven holes. At last year’s state championships, Harper was the team’s alternate, meaning he could not play on the second day of the tournament. The senior made the most of his final high school tournament with steady play through the two days. He shot a 76 on the first day and a 75 on the second.

“This was definitely a confidence boost after not playing well at districts,” Harper said. “Playing well this week was fun. I just treated it like any other tournament and didn’t put too much pressure on myself.”

Hansen finished with a two-day score of 152 (74-78), tying for fifth with last year’s 5A champion Michael Flaherty of Wilsonville. Ditty (76-81) and Delia (80-77) each finished with a two-day score of 157.

Four more Intermountain Conference golfers finished in the top 25 on the leaderboard. Bend High sophomore Silas Waller (79-81—160) finished 14th. Mountain View junior Grayson Moore (81-83—164) was 17th. Mountain View junior Brayden Kussman (81-84—165) finished 20th. And Ridgeview freshman Stephen Chapman (83-84—167) took 21st.
