The Bend Park & Recreation District is asking for public feedback on initial designs for improvements at Hollinshead Park. Comments can be submitted online or in-person beginning Monday, with an open house from 2 to 6 p.m. at Hollinshead Barn.

The list of slated improvements for the 16.1 acre community park — which the district expects to cost $1 million — includes a permanent restroom, ADA compliant paths with better accessibility to Hollinshead Barn, parking area renovations, enclosure of the off-leash dog area and a new History Walk with interpretive signs.

“A big impetus and driver for looking at Hollinshead was many of the ADA accessibility improvements. Those are really the driving force that kick started the larger project discussions,” said Ian Isaacson, park district landscape architect and project manager. ”I’m just really excited about this project. I think a lot of folks in the neighborhood who use this park are excited to see improvements as well.”

Hollinshead Park is located in northeast Bend at 1235 NE Jones Road, and offers amenities like walking trails, a community garden, picnic areas and access to historical buildings. The property was originally a ranch that was donated to the district by Dean and Lily Hollinshead.

Isaacson said he expects the bulk of community feedback will focus on the permanent bathrooms and the plan to enclose the off-leash dog park. Those are the improvements he’s received the most commentary on thus far, but he encourages everyone to examine all aspects of the plans.

The district does not currently have a cost-estimate breakdown for the project or detailed plans for residents to view online, but Isaacson said his team is putting the finishing touches on those resources specifically so the public has an opportunity to view and discuss them at the Monday meeting.

“I think more generally, people understand that the amount of use at (Hollinshead) park is increasing, and there’s just some tender loving care that needs to be done to make sure that the space is able to maintain the amount of use,” Isaacson told The Bulletin.
