Bend residents don’t have to go far for art viewing, performances and fundraising events this weekend.

The Commons Cafe & Taproom will host its monthly spoken word open mic. Open Space Event Studios has three evenings of storytelling about the Lava Lake murders. Celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander heritage month at Tower Theatre with community performances. And support Palestinians by buying or making art to sell at The Ale Apothecary art bazaar fundraiser.

Spoken Word Open Mic

All spoken word forms are welcome at this open mic. Individuals are encouraged to share a story or poem, or just come to listen and appreciate. The event is hosted by and in conjunction with Deschutes Public Library and OSU-Cascades Master of Fine Arts program. Every third Thursday of the month.

‘High Desert Horror — The Story of Ray Jackson’

Clark Week Productions and the Deschutes Historical Museum are teaming up to bring the story of Ray Van Buren Jackson. The Oregon schoolteacher is believed to have been a serial killer. In the unsolved Lava Lakes triple-murder of 1924, Jackson is suspected to have been the accomplice of Charles Kimzey.

The performance, written by Bend native Clinton K. Clark and directed by Raechel Gilland, will be performed in honor of the eight victims whose lives Jackson brought to an untimely end.

APIC Harmony

In celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the Asian and Pacific Islander Collective (APIC) will host an evening of collaborative exhibitions featuring Deschutes Jung’s Taekwondo, Evolving Movement, Melomania, Redmond Kendo Club, spoken word, piano performances and more. APIC aims to contribute to the cultural vibrancy of Deschutes County.

Art Bazaar & Fundraiser

The Ale Apothecary is raising money for Palestinians with an art bazaar fundraiser. Community members are encouraged to make and donate art pieces to be sold to raise funds. Pieces do not have to be Palestinian-related. Admission is free. Prices start at $10.
