Central Oregon trail conditions: Upper Phil’s trails are clear and rideable; Lower Deschutes salmon fly hatch ramps up

Anyone who thought this week’s heat was a rude summer awakening is in luck this weekend. That High Desert air is expected to cool off Friday. Skies should remain clear and sunny, but temperatures shouldn’t reach the 70s.
The midday heat wasn’t good for nothing though. (I know, most people enjoyed it.) The snowmelt was on and cleared some high-elevation trails of snow.
Deschutes National Forest trail crew supervisor Joe Welke reported Monday that access is expanding as the snow line recedes in the national forest. Deep snow does still exist above 5,500 feet. The Deschutes River Trail, Horse Butte area, Phil’s trail system and low-elevation trails around Sisters are all accessible. But most other trails, Welke said, are under at least some snow.

Below are some recommended spots for recreation this weekend.
Cool spring weekend on Bachelor
Mt. Bachelor: The past week’s clear skies has brought no new snow to the ski area. Temperatures will, however, cool off on the mountain this weekend. The mid-mountain forecast says highs will be in the low-40s Friday and Saturday and drop into the 30s Sunday with some daytime clouds. As of Thursday morning, Summit was closed for maintenance.
Bachelor has received 383 inches of snow so far this season. Its base depth on Thursday was 73 inches.

With temperatures dropping this weekend, a hike or trail run in the High Desert could be refreshing to anyone not yet acclimated to midday heat of summer. The Oregon Badlands Wilderness, about a 20-minute drive east of Bend on Highway 20, is great on a cool spring day. The Flatiron Rock Trailhead offers a selection of flat loops at varying distances.

The shorter, easier Ancient Juniper Trail is 3.1 miles with only 200 feet of elevation gain and takes an hour on average to complete. A longer option is the Flatiron to Castle Trail Loop. At 7.5 miles long with 400 feet of gain, it takes 2.5 hours on average. These trails are great for birding and wildflower spotting. Dogs are welcome and can be off leash in spots.
Lower Deschutes salmon fly hatch ramps up
The salmon fly hatch on the lower Deschutes River started earlier this month, according to reports on the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife website, and should be ramping up with the warmer weather. The lower Deschutes from the northern boundary of Warm Springs to Pelton Dam reopened to fishing in April. Reports say that trout fishing has been good in this section of the river and anglers recommend nymphing.

Unfortunately, the Deschutes will not have a spring Chinook season this year. Pelton Dam is northwest of Madras, a couple of miles south of Warm Springs and about an hour drive from Bend.
Upper Phil’s trails rideable
Skyliner, Pinedrops and Upper and Lower Whoops, all part of Phil’s trail complex, are dry, clear of snow and riding well, according to reports on bendtrails.org. These higher-elevation trails connect Phil’s trails to high country that will be accessible later in the season.
Reachable from Skyliner and Phil’s trailheads, these trails offer a fair amount of climbing and descending. Lower Whoops is a downhill-only trail, traveling east, and Pinedrops is mainly used as a climbing trail. It feeds into Lower Whoops and its two-way brother Upper Whoops. When climbing on Upper, keep an eye and ear out for descending riders. They will be zooming on this steep trail.
