EUGENE — In the first three track meets this season, the Culver boys 4×100-meter relay team didn’t just lose races: the team of senior Dustin Noy, freshman Keegan Haro, sophomore Kaydon Haro and senior Trent Reese, didn’t even finish races because it kept dropping the baton.

Two months later at the Class 2A state track and field championships at Hayward Field Friday afternoon, baton exchanges were flawless and the Bulldogs won the relay with a season-best 44.36 seconds.

“We started off not being able to get the handoffs,” Reese said. “Now we are state champions. We just practiced, practiced, practiced as much as we could. Any chance we got, we were practicing our handoffs making sure everything was crispy.”

The Bulldogs just beat Weston-McEwen (44.63) down the stretch, with Noy taking the final handoff and holding onto the lead to give Culver the relay title.

“I wasn’t sure we could do it in the beginning of the season,” Reese said. “But at districts last week when we won, then I knew that we were good to go and we could win it.”

Reese had a stellar day in the individual sprint events, taking second in both the 100- and 200-meter races. He finished the 100 in 11.05, then set a personal record in the 200 with a time of 22.60.

“I felt really ready coming into it,” Reese said. “I was really locked in. I got a good start out of the blocks and am really happy with how I ran.”

Kayden Haro finished just behind Reese in the 200 to finish third with a personal best time of 23.05. Sophomore Tyler Rahi landed on the podium with a sixth-place finish in the pole vault (11 feet, 10 inches).

Senior Renee Johnson medaled in both hurdle events. She finished sixth in the 300 hurdles (49.34) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (16.84).

Busy day for Cascades Academy’s Brust

Cascades Academy finished with 11 points in the 1A meet Friday evening, all 11 points were scored by senior Jay Brust.

Brust medaled in the 100, 200, 400 and 800. He set a personal best and became the school’s highest placer with a second-place finish in the 400 (50.40).

“I’m really happy with the big PR,” Brust said. “I think the cross-country season really helped with my endurance. That endurance really allowed me to do all four events.”

Brust finished eighth in the 100 (11.88) and 200 (24.56), and 800 (2:10.70).

Louisa Lamarre also medaled in two events for Cascades Academy, scoring all seven points for the girls team. She finished eighth in the 800 (2:31.81), then ran a personal best in the 1,500-meter (5:09.58) to take third.
