Charles “Bill” passed away February 29, 2024 with his family at his side. He was born in Bend to Charles William Boyd II and Marguerite Hall Boyd. His grandparents came to Bend from Montana in 1905 to raise cattle to feed the logging camps. Bill grew up raising and loving his dogs and cattle. He graduated from Bend High School in 1958. He was Student Body President his senior year and active in Future Farmers of America.
He attended Oregon State University and received his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science degrees. He then taught High School Science in Richland, Washington, South Salem High School and Sprague High School. He was named Outstanding Oregon Biology Teacher of the Year by the National Association of Biology Teachers in 1973. In 1977 he brought his family back to Bend. He taught one year at Bend High School. He then taught at Mountain View High School until he retired in 1995.
Back in Bend, Bill got involved again in raising and loving his cattle and dogs. He was also a tireless advocate for the preservation of natural spaces in Central Oregon. He also spent time and money preserving his grandparents’ 1905 Homestead Buildings. They are now on the National Register of Historical Sites. His interest in history allowed him to be on the board of the Deschutes County Historical Museum.
Bill is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bonnie, sons John (Jessica), James (Misook), grandchildren Johnathan (Amanda), Dustin, Tasha, Alyssa and William and great grandchildren Charlie, Rylee and Jesse. He was preceded in death by his son Charles “Charley” William Boyd IV.
