Lingering snowpack in the Cascades will delay the opening of some campgrounds in the Deschutes National Forest, possibly scuttling plans for some families ahead of Memorial Day weekend.
Snow levels have prevented annual preseason safety inspections and hazard tree mitigation from being completed in time for the holiday weekend, according to a news release from the National Forest.
Openings at the following campgrounds, previously slated to open before or on Memorial Day weekend, will be delayed:
Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District
• Elk Lake Campground
• Little Fawn Campground
• Mallard Marsh Campground
• Point Campground
• Quinn Meadow Horse Camp
• Soda Creek Campground
• South Campground
Crescent Ranger District
• Trapper Creek Campground
Visitors with reservations at the above locations through May 30 can expect to see a refund and cancellation email. The Forest Service is monitoring snow levels at these campgrounds and will begin cleanup and maintenance work as soon as weather and conditions permit.
Although some campgrounds remain closed, others in the Deschutes National Forest have opened or will be open before Memorial Day. To check the status of campgrounds, visit: fs.usda.gov/recmain/deschutes/recreation.
