Bend Park & Recreation District needs teen volunteers to work with recreation programs this summer.
Opportunities are available from late June through August, and include volunteering at Shevlin Park’s Cougar Camp and the art camps at Cascade Middle School, the district said in a news release. There are a few openings with the Junior Lifeguard and Swim Instructor Aide programs at Larkspur Community Center and Juniper Swim & Fitness Center pools.
Teen volunteers learn job skills and gain experience working with children while providing support to recreation programs.
Volunteers must be able to commit to a schedule, enjoy working with younger kids, be willing to take initiative and be able to create an enjoyable environment for participants.
The time commitment, required age, schedule and training vary based on the program. All volunteers must be at least 12 years old.
More information on volunteer opportunities can be found on the park district’s website. An application is required, and criminal background checks are required for volunteers age 18 and up.
Oregon State University-Cascades will host a science pub discussing the role of Antarctic krill in the Southern Ocean and the challenges of conducting research in the Antarctic from 5:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. June 20. The event will take place in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium in Edward J. Ray Hall.
Professor Kim Bernard is an ocean ecologist, biogeochemist and professor in Oregon State University’s College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences. She studies zooplankton ecologies with a focus on Antarctic krill.
Bernard has spent more than 49 months in Antarctica conducting fieldwork. She contributes her experience to continue efforts globally in marine science.
She will share how the Southern Ocean marine ecosystem depends on krill and how the crustacean is responding to climate change. Bernard will also tell stories from her research expeditions.
The event will include a light dinner and a no-host bar. Registration is required, and the event costs $22. On-campus parking is free. The event is limited to 120 people.
