A structure fire in La Pine killed one person and burned multiple structures early Saturday morning, authorities said.
The body of David Hill, 67, was found alongside his dog by the La Pine Fire Department in his home on the 15000 block of Old Mill Road about 10 hours after the fire began.
According to a joint news release from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and the La Pine Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:05 a.m. Saturday. Initial reports said the house was engulfed in flames and that the fire was spreading to nearby structures on the property. Explosions were being heard, the release said.
When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they evacuated nearby neighbors as a precautionary measure.
Ultimately, only minor damages were caused to neighboring structures and fences.
The fire required 12 engines and 22 firefighters to contain and La Pine Fire was present at the scene throughout the night. At 10 a.m., the fire was extinguished sufficiently enough that authorities were able to locate Hill’s body.
The cause of the fire does not appear criminal in nature, said Sgt. Kyle Klambach in the release.
