- A Bend Police Department patrol vehicle is parked in front of the Deschutes County Courthouse in Bend in January.
A homeless man was found murdered at his campsite in Bend on Thursday, and his death was a result of multiple injuries including stab wounds, according to new details from police.
David Hickman, 62, was found dead in a ditch near the Pacific Pride gas station off of North U.S. Highway 97 on Thursday.
Bend Police officers arrested Brian Lee Wynn, 31, Friday. The arrest came after an autopsy revealed Hickman was stabbed multiple times with a knife, among other injuries, according to results from the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
“The investigation showed that Mr. Hickman had suffered numerous injuries including apparent knife wounds,” Deschutes County District Attorney Steve Gunnels told The Bulletin.
However, police are still investigating what weapon was used to commit the homicide, Sheila Miller, Bend police spokesperson said Monday.
The murder occurred late Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning, Miller said in a news release.
Police identified Wynn as a suspect after reviewing security footage in the area and speaking with witnesses, Miller said.
Wynn was also homeless. It still is not clear what kind of relationship the two men had. Both Miller and Gunnels declined to speculate on a possible motive.
Wynn was charged with second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon in Deschutes County Circuit Court on Monday.
He was arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Monday, when he appeared by video from the Deschutes County jail. Wynn will remain there without bail. He was appointed an attorney, Raun Atkinson of Atlas Law Group, and his next court date is set for June 10 at which he’ll be arraigned on an indictment.
Wynn’s brother was in court Monday and so were two friends who live at a local homeless shelter.
“No one should go through this alone,” Chrissy Doyle, one of Wynn’s friends, said.
Mary Farmer, another friend, said Wynn struggled with mental illness. He hears voices, she said.
Wynn has a criminal history dating back to 2012. According to court records, he became homeless sometime between October and November 2020, but he previously had addresses in Redmond and Prineville.
The Bend Police Department is requesting the public’s help in locating a blanket that may contain evidence useful to the department’s investigation of Hickman’s death.
“Police believe the blanket, seen in the attached photo, was worn by Wynn around the time of the homicide,” Miller said.
If someone finds the blanket, Miller said they should call Detective Chad Owens at 541-728-1242.
