Author responds to climate anxiety in ‘Rooted’

For those asking what can be done in light of the climate crisis, Lyanda Lynn Haupt has a response.

The author, naturalist and speaker addresses the question in her book, “Rooted: Life at the Crossroads of Science, Nature and Spirit.”

The book offers way markers and guideposts on developing a deeper understanding of the natural world, Haupt said. It explores the interconnectedness of science, nature and spirit, the latter which Haupt defines as unquantifiable aspects of human intelligence such as imagination, creativity, wonder and awe.

“The answer is as individual as the human who’s asking it. There is no one right answer. It’s based on our gifts, our loves, the way we are in the world,” Haupt said.

Reception of the book since its publication last year has been overwhelming, Haupt said.

“It made me realize just how thirsty people are for this kind of connection and this kind of exploring our relationship with nature,” she said.

Upcoming author events in Bend

Haupt will be in Bend to discuss “Rooted” at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Oregon (UUFCO) on Friday and at Roundabout Books on Saturday.

“It’s going to be an invigorating sharing of ideas about nature, connection and our place in the world,” she said, adding that there’ll be time for Q&A, signing books and chatting with Haupt one-on-one.

Haupt is also the author of “Mozart’s Starling” and the recipient of the Washington State Book Award and the Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award, according to a press release.

“Rooted” is available wherever books are sold, but Haupt encourages purchasing from an independent bookshop such as Roundabout Books. She shares updates and wild ideas on Instagram @lyandahaupt and in her newsletter, which is published about once a month.
