Bend Brewfest canceled as craft beer industry flags

Bend Brewfest, originally set to take place Oct. 4 and 5 at Hayden Homes Amphitheater, has been canceled.

The event was meant to showcase innovative craft breweries in the Pacific Northwest. The craft beer industry had a static production year in 2022, and festivals have been falling by the wayside since, according to the online news site Axios. The long-running Oregon Brewers Festival in Portland, once one of the largest beer festivals in the country, canceled its 2023 event and has not announced plans to bring it back this year.

People who pre-purchased mugs and token packages for Bend Brewfest will be refunded, as will breweries who have already paid a deposit to participate in the festival.

The Old Mill District cited too many “hurdles” when it announced the cancellation Monday.

Changing the date from August to October this year meant it was harder to get patrons to commit to a brew festival, said Beau Eastes, marketing director for Hayden Homes Amphitheater and the Old Mill District.

“We love putting this on and this is one of the most fun events. We’ve done this event for over 20 years, and we love being a part of supporting the craft brew industry,” said Eastes. “It’s a tough time to put on Brewfest right now. We’re not the only ones grappling with those challenges, especially post-COVID.”

One silver lining was that the cancellation is early enough that people can reschedule their travel plans, or come to Bend for something else, he said.

“We’ll do everything we can to see it take form in some other way in the future, just not sure what that looks like right now,” said Eastes.

Bend Brewfest, previously the second-largest craft brew festival in the Pacific Northwest, was intended to return to Hayden Homes Amphitheater for the first time since 2019. It began in 2003, but was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. A smaller event was held on the east side of the Deschutes River in the Old Mill District in 2022. The event was canceled in 2023 until it could return to the amphitheater.

Bend Brewfest has raised over $150,000 for nonprofits since it began.
