An accidental fire destroyed an outbuilding and a car on a farm property near Bend on Monday morning.

The fire occurred along Deschutes Market Road and north of the Petrosa housing development, said fire officials. Smoke was highly visible in the area.

The outbuilding was being used as a residence for one person, and the fire likely started due to electrical failure, said Bend Fire & Rescue Deputy Fire Marshal Dan Derlacki. Power was supplied to the 12-by-12 building with an extension cord, which was running many devices, he said.

A caller reported the fire at 9:12 a.m. and said it was spreading from an outbuilding to nearby brush and other buildings. Occupants from the main home were using garden hoses to keep it from spreading when crews arrived. Bend Fire & Rescue put out the fire within 15 to 20 minutes, Derlacki said. The occupant of the destroyed building was not home when the fire started.

“Luckily it was early enough in the day that the winds were not very heavy. Things are just starting to dry out, so it kept this thing from spreading too much,” said Derlacki.

The loss of the building and older Honda car is estimated at $25,000, he said. The Red Cross is assisting the occupant with a place to stay.
