Happy summer solstice everyone! It’s going to be a hot one.

When highs in Central Oregon near 90 degrees Fahrenheit, getting out on the trails early is key. There’s no better way to enjoy the surrounding national forests and High Desert than a morning on the trails and afternoon on the Deschutes River.

Temperatures are expected to rise over the weekend, peaking Saturday with a high of 89 degrees Fahrenheit. Highs will be in the 80s the through Tuesday with lows in the 50s overnight. Expect clear skies and sunshine.

Below are some recommended spots for recreation this weekend.

Southern Deschutes trails offer variety

Whether you start from Sunriver, Wanoga trailhead or Cascade Lakes Welcome Center, the trails on the south side of Century Drive are a great option. Mostly intermediate trails, these are flowing and fun. And you can connect the Deschutes area near Sunriver to Tyler’s Trailhead and the Wanoga trail system via a variety of trail combinations. Currently, downhill jump line Lower Tiddlywinks is closed for maintenance but the rest of the area is riding well.

The Sisters area has its pick of short, new trails ranging in difficulty. Beginner trails Black Rock and Swan Song offer up to 6 miles of easy riding. Storm King and Catch & Release are lower intermediate and beginner routes to take from the welcome center. Higher up — toward Wanoga — is Funner, a popular, technical trail and shuttle route in the summer.

Stonefly hatch in full swing on lower Deschutes

June is the most popular time of year to fish for redband trout on the lower Deschutes River using stonefly hatches, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife website. Dry fly fishing has been good for anglers who come prepared with various patterns, the report says, and warm weather in Maupin will make the hatch pick up. Anglers should pay attention to the bugs and hatches occurring on any given day. Nymphing is also a good way to catch fish on the Deschutes too.

The lower Deschutes from the northern boundary of Warm Springs to Pelton Dam reopened to fishing in April. Unfortunately, the Deschutes will not have a spring Chinook season this year. Pelton Dam is northwest of Madras, a couple of miles south of Warm Springs and about an hour drive from Bend.

Wildlife viewing, fishing, boating at Crane Prairie

Warmer, summer temperatures make it a great time to try out the mountain lakes. Crane Prairie Reservoir is a lower option, around 4,500 feet, that offers wildlife viewing, fishing and camping. It’s a popular spot for migratory birds. Osprey Point has interpretive signs about local fauna and artificial osprey nesting platforms.

June through August is considered the best time for fishing and boating. Rainbow trout is the most popular catch on the reservoir, while other species include brook trout, kokanee salmon, largemouth bass and whitefish. Boat ramps are open at the Crane Prairie Resort, and float tubes can be launched at Rocky Point and Rocky Creek.

Rewards for conquerors of Misery Ridge

The 6.2-mile Misery Ridge and Summit Trail loop is considered a challenging route, with 1,700 feet of elevation gain, but offers rewards to those who climb it. Not exactly for individuals looking for a lonely nature outing, this popular hiking and running spot in Smith Rock State Park provides outstanding views of the areas rock formations and outcroppings as well as the surrounding High Desert and Cascade Mountains. You can also spectate as rock climbers scale nearby routes on Monkey Face.

The trail winds its way through the state park and along the Crooked River. It can take anywhere from two to three hours depending on expertise and pace. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.

Smith Rock day use fees are $5 year-round. The park is a couple miles east of Terrebonne and about a 40-minute drive from Bend.
