Editorial: Biggest construction of 2022 Bend school bond begins

An excavator prepares to take a second bite Thursday morning of demolition of buildings at Bend Senior High School.

Want to know where all that money voters authorized in the $250 million, 2022 bond for Bend-La Pine Schools has been going?

An excavator took one of the first demolition bites Thursday morning for the biggest single part of that bond, a more than $148 million redo of Bend Senior High School.

The Lava Bears are getting a better den to learn in. The baseball field? Coming out. Those nearby restrooms and other buildings? Coming down. C and D Halls built in 1955 are coming down. I Hall built in the 1980s is also coming down.

The plan is to keep the best of the school and get rid of the worst. It’s going to be a while before all the work is done — four years.

We can’t help but note that voters supported the 2022 district-wide bond for construction projects, not the proposed 2024 levy that would have helped more directly what happens in classrooms.
