- Bend Police continued their investigation Thursday afternoon into a Wednesday evening murder at Legacy Landing, a low-income apartment complex for seniors in Bend. Joshua Lawrence Smith has been charged with second-degree murder for allegedly killing his mother, Janice Marie Smith, 59.
Police arrested two men suspected of an armed robbery on Bend’s east side Sunday.
A man living at the apartment complex near NE Forum Drive and NE 27th Street called police to report that three men had robbed him at gunpoint around 2:23 p.m. Sunday, Sheila Miller, spokesperson for the Bend Police Department, said in a news release.

The men took his wallet, car keys and phone then drove away in his gray Nissan sedan, Miller said.
Around 3:51 p.m., police found the car in a driveway on the 1700 block of NE Pheasant Lane, which is a roughly seven-minute drive from the apartments.

Team — the SWAT team
for Crook, Deschutes and
Jefferson counties — was called to respond “due to the nature of the call,” Miller said.

The house was empty when authorities entered, but detectives found the man’s stolen wallet, cellphone and car keys along with two “AR-style rifles” and a handgun, which the man said is what was used to hold him at gunpoint.
Emilio San Marcos Garcia Gonzalez, 35, and Jose Guadalupe Sanchez Larios, 34, returned to the house on Pheasant Lane when officers were still there, and they were arrested on suspicion of robbery, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, criminal conspiracy and theft.
Police are still trying to identify the third man involved in the robbery, Miller said.
She said the men all knew each other.
Garcia Gonzalez and Sanchez Larios, both of Bend, were charged in Deschutes County Circuit Court on Monday.
Each was charged with two counts of first-degree robbery, two counts of menacing, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, first- and second-degree theft, criminal conspiracy and unauthorized use of a vehicle, according to charging documents.
