A passing train ignited two fires — one in Bend and one in Redmond — Monday due to a the locked up brakes on a rail car, fire officials said.

Sparks from a train car’s locked-up brakes ignited two small fires on Monday in Bend and Redmond along the tracks that parallel U.S. Highway 97, authorities said.

Around 2:45 p.m. Bend Fire & Rescue crews responded to a brush fire along the east side of the highway north of the Butler Market Road exit, Cindy Kettering, spokesperson for the agency, said in a news release.

The fire was pushed to the south by gusty winds, Kettering said. However, the railroad tracks to the east and a canal to the south provided natural fire breaks, so crews held the fire’s progress to about a quarter of an acre, she said.

Investigators later discovered a train had recently passed through the area traveling south. A small fire had also ignited in Redmond, Kettering said.

Burlington Northern Santa-Fe Railway employees stopped the train to inspect it, and they found that one of the car’s breaks had locked up.
