- Firefighters used a whitewater raft to reach the Long Bend Fire, which is burning 2 miles southwest of Maupin. As of Monday morning, it had consumed 1,024 acres, mainly on Bureau of Land Management land and private lands.
The 1,024-acre Long Bend Fire burning two miles from the town of Maupin in Wasco County is winding down. Containment on the fire increased to 60% as of Wednesday.
Wildland firefighters are working to extinguish heat sources within the fire perimeter, Central Oregon Fire Management Service said in a news release. Crews are also patrolling the flanks of the fire.
Most of the heat is along Wapinitia Creek, and firefighters are attacking these areas with aircraft.
Helicopters continue to draw water from the Deschutes River to battle what remains of the fire. Boaters are advised to use caution and follow directions from firefighters when helicopters are present. Due to fire-related hazards along the banks of the river, rafters are advised not to come ashore within the fire perimeter.
The fire began Saturday, and the cause remains under investigation.
