Get your pet costumes and wagons ready for Bend’s Fourth of July Pet Parade starting at Harmon Park on Thursday.

The parade begins at 10 a.m., with the lineup at 9 a.m. The parade will make its way north on Harmon Boulevard to Newport Avenue, east to Wall Street and to the finish line at Drake Park.

Bend’s Pet Parade started 100 years ago, in 1924. It has been designated an Oregon Heritage tradition. Due to pausing during World War II and the pandemic, this will be the 97th parade.

Participants are encouraged to bring a pet or stuffed animal in costume, as well as wagons, bicycles or tricycles. Spectators are also welcome to watch. Cats, rabbits and aggressive animals are not allowed. 

The Bend Park & Recreation District recommends beating the heat, though the parade is set to end before hottest part of the day. Wearing a hat, sunscreen and breathable fabric are recommended.

Water for dogs will be located on the Drake and Harmon park lawns along the parade route. Check dogs for signs of overheating and be aware that asphalt heats up faster than the air, so check pets’ paws. Do not leave pets in cars, even for a few minutes.

All ages are welcome and no registration is necessary. Please leash and clean up after pets. Larger animals need to arrive early, and trailer parking is on Riverside Boulevard. E-bikes and motorcycles are not allowed.

Parking can be found on the perimeter of downtown and in the parking garage. American with Disabilities Act-compliant parking can be found in the downtown parking garage, Newport Avenue Church of Christ and in the City of Bend parking lot on Franklin Avenue.

Volunteers are needed to help monitor the parade route and to assist with the start and finish. Information on how to sign up can be found on the park district’s website.
