- This is what's left of a home destroyed by the Carr Fire near Redding, California, in 2018. The fire burned more than 1,000 homes and did more than $1.6 billion in damage.
Get fired up for the Junior Fire Ranger Festival, coming this summer to ignite youth interest in fire safety.
The festival is the first of its kind in Central Oregon and gives youth ages four to 16 a chance to become junior fire rangers in just one day.
The family-friendly event will take place from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 12, at the Big Obsidian Flow Trailhead in Newberry Caldera.
The event will be put on by U.S. Forest Service fire rangers and volunteers and is hosted by the Deschutes National Forest and Discover Your Forest, a nonprofit environmental conservation organization.
Youth and adults will have the opportunity to participate in fire ecology and fire safety activities including touring a fire engine and learning about campfire safety, fire-adapted plants and animals, fire prevention, fire lookouts and more.
Upon completing the activities, youth will have the chance to earn a Newberry National Volcanic Monument Junior Ranger badge, according to Laken Bosé, Discover Your Forest education and interpretive programs manager.
“Regularly, (junior ranger programs) are for six to eight year olds,” Bosé said. “With the festival format we are able to reach a broader audience and have interpretive programs for adults and then have a wider range of activities to reach a wider age group.”
The event is free. No registration is needed, but a valid recreation pass is required at the Big Obsidian Flow Trailhead. Youth are required to be accompanied by an adult at all times.
